Description of the Teacher Evaluation System

The Long Beach Island School District implements a teacher evaluation system that is in accordance with New Jersey laws and regulations. A summary of instructional observations, commendations, and recommendations are prepared by the evaluator and given to the teacher as a written report. The following domains are addressed: Preparation, Components of the Lesson, Instructional Performance, Assessment and Feedback to Students, and Classroom Management. Several indicators are included in each domain. In addition to the classroom observation, indicators such as teacher and student work samples, teacher self‐reflections, pre‐ and post‐conferencing are reviewed. Tenured teachers are evaluated once during the year and again at the end of the year. Non‐tenured teachers are evaluated three times during the year and again at the end of the year.

Communication with families and parental feedback about their child’s progress is significant. Progress reports, report cards, parent‐teacher conferences, telephone calls, email, and daily logs are examples of some of the methods of communication. The students in the Long Beach Island School District typically perform well. Parents and the general public should be assured that the teachers challenge themselves regularly by setting annual goals and make every effort to ensure that all students in the system are successful.
