Barnegat Bay Blitz 2013

The Barnegat Bay Blitz, an event led by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Clean Communities Council, involves various partners throughout Ocean County, such as towns and schools, coming together and focusing on the local environment to help clean up the bay and watershed area. The goal is to promote awareness of our connection to the bay, and to help appreciate Barnegat Bay and our natural resources. Our school participated in this spring's event by visiting the lighthouse, cleaning up our school grounds, cleaning up the marshes and beaches, as well as planting dune grass and other beach plants. Our students thoroughly enjoy cleaning up their local environment, and truly feel that the Barnegat Bay Blitz is the best field trip!

EJ Garden

Spring has sprung and students at EJ are busy planting the garden with cool weather plants.  Our fence was repaired this week by Mr. Einselen and we are ready to get dirty and start planting! Grade 2 has planted 2 varieties of snap peas to compare and contrast using both meter and yard sticks for a hands-on math lessons. Grade 1 will be installing hoop houses for carrots, basil and mesclun greens.  These varieties are incorporated into a science strand linked to roots.  The items were donated from Donors Choose. Our  Kindergarten is rolling out "Farming Fridays," which incorporates a gardening journal. Weathering a windy Friday, students planted strawberries, spinach and radishes.  The plants and seeds were donated by our Board of Education and Stockton College.  The littlest hands in the garden, Pre-K 3 and 4, have created two perennial beds of asparagus and beautified the planting boxes with brilliant pansies.

Thanks again to our Board of Education for the asparagus crowns and to the Student Health Office for the pansies.

Dependent on our gardens ability to produce, the upper grades will be participating in data collection and analysis through the Information Technology and Science curriculum strands.  We hope to have a taste test in late spring before the summer ethnic gardens go in. Happy Spring!
